Something new is happening in the landscape of human connection, and as a therapist, I’m paying attention.
People are forming relationships with AI. Not in a distant, science-fiction way—but right now, on their phones. They’re texting AI companions about their day, seeking advice from chatbots, and in some cases, developing what feels like genuine emotional bonds with artificial intelligence.
This isn’t a trend I can dismiss or ignore. The technology exists, people are using it, and as someone who works in the realm of emotional wellbeing and connection, I need to understand what’s really happening here—and what it means for the humans navigating this new terrain.
The Landscape of AI Companionship in 2025
AI companion apps have evolved dramatically. We’re not talking about simple chatbots that give canned responses anymore. Current AI can engage in nuanced conversation, remember previous interactions, adapt its communication style to individual users, and provide what feels like personalized emotional support.
Some people use AI companions casually—a quick chat when they’re bored or need to think through a problem. Others develop more significant relationships with these digital entities, turning to them daily for support, comfort, and connection.
The apps market themselves differently. Some position as mental health support tools. Others are more explicitly designed as friends, romantic partners, or general companions. The common thread is the promise of connection without the complications of human relationships.
And here’s what I find most important to understand: for many people, these AI companions are filling a real need. The question isn’t whether that need is legitimate—it absolutely is. The question is what happens when we meet human needs with artificial solutions, and what that means for our wellbeing long-term.
Why People Are Turning to AI Companions
Before judging this phenomenon, I think it’s crucial to understand the appeal. AI companions offer something that’s increasingly hard to find in modern life: availability.
They’re always there. At 2 AM when you can’t sleep and anxiety is spiraling, your AI companion responds instantly. No one is too busy, too tired, or too wrapped up in their own problems. There’s no waiting for a text back or wondering if you’re bothering someone. The absence of rejection is powerful when you’ve experienced a lot of it.
They’re predictably safe. AI companions don’t judge, get angry, misunderstand your intentions, or bring their own emotional baggage to the interaction. For people who’ve been hurt in relationships, criticized, or made to feel like they’re “too much,” this predictability can feel like relief. There’s no social risk, no vulnerability hangover after you’ve shared something personal.
They adapt to you. These AI systems learn your communication style, remember what you’ve shared, and tailor responses to what seems to work for you. In a world where many people feel unseen or misunderstood, having something that appears to “get you” meets a deep psychological need.
They offer control. You can exit the conversation whenever you want. You can start over if you don’t like where things are going. You’re never trapped in an uncomfortable interaction or managing someone else’s emotions. For people who feel powerless in their human relationships, this control is appealing.
They fill the loneliness gap. This is the big one. We’re experiencing an epidemic of loneliness, particularly in the wake of the pandemic and with the increasing digitization of daily life. When human connection feels scarce or difficult to access, AI companionship becomes a logical response to a genuine problem.
What AI Companions Can’t Provide
Here’s where my role as a therapist becomes relevant. Because while I understand the appeal, I also understand what’s missing—and what that absence means for human development and wellbeing.
Authentic mutuality doesn’t exist with AI. Real relationships involve two people affecting each other. Your mood impacts mine; my needs sometimes conflict with yours; we negotiate and compromise and grow through that friction. AI companions simulate mutuality, but they don’t have needs, moods, or genuine reactions. They respond based on algorithms designed to keep you engaged, not because they’re actually moved by what you’ve shared.
Growth through challenge is absent. The most significant personal growth often comes from relationships that push us, frustrate us, and require us to see beyond our own perspective. AI companions are optimized for user satisfaction—they’re not going to give you the kind of honest, difficult feedback that a real friend might offer because it might make you use the app less.
Embodied presence can’t be replicated digitally. There’s something that happens when you’re physically in the same space as another person—mirror neurons firing, nervous systems regulating each other, the subtle communication that happens through body language and shared silence. Text on a screen, no matter how responsive, isn’t the same as sitting across from someone who’s actually there.
Genuine surprise and novelty are limited. AI companions, sophisticated as they are, are still drawing from patterns in their training data and responding to your input. They don’t bring truly new perspectives, unexpected experiences, or the delightful unpredictability of another consciousness separate from your own.
The capacity for genuine care isn’t there. An AI companion processes your words and generates responses, but it doesn’t actually care about you. It doesn’t worry when you’re gone too long or feel joy at your successes. The appearance of care can be comforting, but it’s not the same as being held in someone else’s mind and heart.
The Therapeutic Perspective: Neither Villainizing Nor Celebrating
My job isn’t to shame people for finding comfort where they can find it. If someone is using an AI companion and it’s helping them feel less alone, I’m not going to tell them they’re doing something wrong.
But I am going to be honest about what I’m observing and what concerns me from a mental health perspective.
The substitution risk is real. When AI companionship feels easier and safer than human connection, some people stop reaching out to real people altogether. The more you practice connecting with AI, the more you might be reinforcing patterns that make human connection feel harder. Human relationships require skills—tolerating discomfort, navigating conflict, managing vulnerability—and those skills atrophy when we don’t use them.
The feedback loop problem happens when AI companions confirm our existing worldview rather than challenging it. If you’re telling your AI companion about a conflict and it consistently validates your perspective without offering other viewpoints, you might be reinforcing thinking patterns that keep you stuck. Real friends sometimes say “I love you, but I think you might be wrong about this.”
The intimacy illusion can interfere with people recognizing what they’re actually missing. Feeling like you have a companion can mask the deeper loneliness of not being truly known by another person. It’s the emotional equivalent of junk food—it satisfies the craving in the moment but doesn’t provide the nutrition you actually need.
The dependency concern emerges when people become so reliant on AI companions that the thought of disconnecting creates anxiety. Any relationship that you can’t be without has become a dependency, and dependencies—even on seemingly harmless things—limit your freedom and flexibility.
That said, I also see potential benefits when AI companionship is used thoughtfully:
As a bridge, not a destination. For someone who’s been isolated and struggles with social anxiety, practicing conversation with AI might build confidence for eventual human interaction. The key word is “eventual”—it needs to be a step toward connection, not a permanent replacement.
For specific, bounded uses. Using AI to think through a problem, organize your thoughts before a difficult conversation, or practice articulating something you want to say to a real person—these can be useful applications. The difference is intention and awareness.
As a supplement during crisis moments. If you’re having a panic attack at 3 AM and AI helps you regulate enough to get through the night, that’s valuable. The concern is when crisis-level usage becomes the daily norm because human support never develops.
What This Means for Therapy
The rise of AI companions intersects with therapy in complicated ways.
Some people wonder: Why pay for therapy when I can get emotional support from an AI for free? It’s a fair question, and it deserves a real answer.
Therapy is fundamentally different from AI companionship. A therapist doesn’t just respond to what you say—we’re trained to notice what you don’t say, patterns across sessions, inconsistencies between your words and affect, and underlying dynamics that might not be obvious to you. We push when it’s therapeutic to push and sit with discomfort instead of immediately soothing it away.
The therapeutic relationship itself is part of the healing. Experiencing a consistent, boundaried, safe relationship with another human helps repair attachment wounds and creates a template for healthier relationships in your life. You can’t get that from AI because the relationship isn’t real—it’s a simulation of relationship, which is therapeutically quite different.
Therapy helps you grow, not just feel better. AI companions are generally optimized to make you feel good, calm, or validated in the moment. Therapy sometimes makes you feel uncomfortable because we’re working on things that need to change. That temporary discomfort is often where the growth happens.
A therapist has professional, ethical obligations. I’m bound by confidentiality, required to act in your best interest even when that conflicts with keeping you satisfied, and trained to recognize when something needs a level of intervention that talk therapy can’t provide. AI companions have no such obligations or capabilities.
The Deeper Question: What Are We Really Searching For?
Beneath the technology conversation is something more fundamental. The rise of AI companions points to how disconnected many people feel and how difficult genuine human connection has become.
The loneliness epidemic is real. Social infrastructure has eroded. We’re more connected digitally and more isolated practically. Community spaces have disappeared. Extended family is often geographically scattered. The rhythms of daily life that used to create natural connection—regular gatherings, neighborhood interactions, workplace relationships—have all been disrupted.
AI companions are a symptom of this larger problem, not the cause. And while they’re not the solution either, they’re revealing something important: people are desperate for connection, and they’ll find it wherever they can.
As a therapist working in New York State, I see this playing out in sessions. People describe having hundreds of social media connections but no one to call in a crisis. They’re exhausted by the performance required in digital spaces but can’t figure out how to build authentic connection. They’re afraid of vulnerability but starving for real intimacy.
Navigating This New Reality
So what do we do with all of this? How do we navigate a world where AI companionship is not only possible but increasingly normalized?
Stay conscious about your use. If you’re using AI companions, be honest with yourself about why and what you’re getting from it. Is it supplementing your human connections or replacing them? Are you using it as a tool or depending on it emotionally? Awareness is the first step to intentional choice.
Invest in human skills. Precisely because AI companionship is so easy, we need to deliberately practice the harder work of human connection. This means tolerating the awkwardness, sitting with the uncertainty, repairing after conflicts, and building relationships over time.
Notice what you avoid. If AI feels safer than humans, that’s information worth exploring. What specifically about human connection feels threatening? What past experiences have made vulnerability difficult? These are excellent questions to bring to therapy.
Diversify your connection sources. Don’t put all your emotional eggs in any single basket—whether that’s one human relationship or an AI companion. Resilient wellbeing comes from multiple sources of connection and support.
Prioritize embodied experiences. Make time for in-person interaction, even when it feels harder than digital connection. Join something—a class, a group, a regular gathering—where you see the same people repeatedly. Consistency and physical presence create the conditions for deeper connection.
Seek professional support when needed. If loneliness is persistent, if you’re struggling to form or maintain human relationships, or if you’re aware that your use of AI companionship is becoming problematic, therapy can help address the underlying issues.
The Future We’re Creating
Technology isn’t going away, and AI companions will likely become more sophisticated, not less. This is the reality we’re living in, and as a therapist, I need to help people navigate it rather than pretend it doesn’t exist.
What concerns me isn’t the technology itself—it’s the possibility that we’ll optimize for comfort and convenience at the expense of the messy, difficult, irreplaceable experience of genuine human connection.
Real relationships are hard. They require vulnerability, patience, forgiveness, and the willingness to be changed by another person. They involve conflict and repair, misunderstanding and clarification, disappointment and recommitment. This difficulty isn’t a bug—it’s a feature. It’s through this challenging process that we develop emotional resilience, empathy, and the capacity for genuine intimacy.
AI companions offer connection without the difficulty, and that might be the most seductive and dangerous thing about them. Because in removing the challenge, we might also remove the growth.
