Is It Burnout, Anxiety, or Just a Hard Season? How to Tell the Difference This Fall
written by Alicia Murray, LMHCD, Syracuse, NY
Fall has a way of making life feel full very quickly.
Summer schedules end. Kids go back to school. Work routines tighten up. Activities restart. Calendars fill with appointments, practices, meetings, and obligations that seemed much farther away a few weeks ago.
If you’re suddenly feeling more tired, irritable, anxious, or overwhelmed, it doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong.
Sometimes a hard season really is a hard season.
But there can also be a point when “I just need to get through this week” turns into several weeks of barely keeping up.
So how can you tell whether you’re experiencing normal fall stress, burnout, anxiety, or something that might benefit from additional support?
Sometimes It Really Is Transition Stress
Even positive routine changes require adjustment.
You may be waking up earlier, managing new schedules, getting everyone where they need to be, catching up after summer vacations, or trying to establish routines that haven’t quite become routine yet.
Temporary stress often has some connection to what’s happening around you. You may feel stretched for a few days, but you can still find moments when your mind and body settle.
As the new routine becomes familiar, things gradually begin to feel more manageable.
When Overwhelm Starts Looking More Like Burnout
Burnout can feel different from having a particularly busy week.
You may notice that rest isn’t really restoring you anymore. Small requests feel disproportionately frustrating. Things you normally handle without much thought suddenly require a lot more energy.
You might also find yourself thinking, “I just need to make it to Friday,” only to reach the weekend and spend it recovering enough to start all over again.
For people who are accustomed to being responsible, productive, or the person everyone depends on, burnout can be easy to minimize because technically, everything is still getting done.
When Anxiety Is Along for the Ride
Anxiety can add another layer.
Instead of only feeling busy, you may find yourself mentally rehearsing everything that needs to happen, worrying about what you’ve forgotten, checking schedules repeatedly, or having trouble shutting your brain off when the day finally ends.
Your body may feel tired while your mind remains alert.
You might even have a free evening and realize you don’t actually know how to relax during it.
A Quick Fall Self-Check
Rather than asking yourself, “Is this bad enough?” try noticing the pattern.
Temporary seasonal stress may sound like:
- “This week is unusually busy.”
- “I’m tired, but rest actually helps.”
- “I can still enjoy things when I have downtime.”
- “As I adjust to the new routine, I’m starting to feel better.”
It may be worth getting additional support when:
- Every week feels like another week to survive.
- You’re having a harder time recovering even when you rest.
- Worry follows you into moments that should feel calm.
- You’re increasingly irritable, disconnected, or overwhelmed.
- Your usual ways of coping don’t seem to be helping.
- You’ve been telling yourself “things will calm down soon” for a long time.
You don’t need to perfectly identify whether what you’re experiencing is stress, burnout, or anxiety before reaching out.
Therapy Can Help You Sort Through It
Sometimes people hesitate to start therapy because they aren’t sure what they’re experiencing.
That uncertainty is okay.
Therapy can provide space to slow down and look at what has changed, what keeps draining you, what your mind and body may be responding to, and which patterns are making an already demanding season feel even heavier.
You don’t have to wait until you’re completely depleted to start that conversation.
